Paddling Checklist

Spring Paddling Checklist

4/21/2022

At L.A.O, we spend our winters planning in anticipation of the upcoming paddling season. Our spring paddling checklist will help get you prepared to be back out on the water!
  • Clean boat
  • Inspect for wear
  • Check bolts/ hatches/ attached accessories
  • Check lines
  • Check rudder/ skeg
  • Check paddle and safety equipment (PFD, batteries, first aid etc.)
Depending on storage conditions, or if your boat has been in storage for a while, the first thing you may have to do is clean your boat. If your boat has been exposed to the elements over the winter, you may also have to deal with moisture inside the craft. While cleaning your boat, inspect for any damage, cracking, or wear from the winter or previous season.

Over the winter, your boat’s accessories or attachments may have become loose. Check any bolts or hatch tethers for slack or damage. Your deck lines may also have stretched out or become slack. Check for tension, and tighten or replace lines as needed.

Issues with drop down skegs or rudders after winter in storage aren't uncommon. Pulleys and cables may have locked up over the off season. Testing your skeg prior to your first paddle is always recommended, repairs and adjustments are much easier to do on dry land!

Keeping your safety gear up-to-date and in good condition is always important. Take the time at the beginning of the season to check over any safety kits or first aid supplies. Replace or charge any batteries, and ensure flashlights and fire starters aren't broken or water damaged. Make sure you check safety gear before every paddle, looking for wear or overuse.

Ensuring you’re prepared for the season is the best way to safely enjoy it. Happy Paddling!
