TESTIMONIALS
"Had such an awesome time! Costa Rica has been on my bucket list for years and this trip did not disappoint. Enjoyed expanding my comfort zone and trying a whole bunch of new activities. There were a lot of things to do in a short period of time, but it didn't feel rushed and still had some time to enjoy on your own."

"While planning the trip to Costa Rica I was confident in stepping outside of my comfort zone and do something other than just thinking about it. After going on a one-day kayaking trip a couple years ago with Liverpool Adventure Outfitters, I was ready to book their Costa Rica trip. Simply put, LAO has a bunch of remarkable and experienced people with just a little something extra. You are "travelling amongst caring friends who've got your back every step of the way”. As expected, the staff were consistently supportive, and positive towards each other and the guests for the entire Costa Rica trip; we all felt like part of this team! I didn’t worry about anything whatsoever except whether I’d get a good cup of java in the morning.
I want to do a shout out to all deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Listen-up! As a deaf person, LAO has become one of my favourite shops for supplies, bikes, other outdoor equipment and now travel! The people at LAO are professional yet caring and the fact that they tailor to smaller groups on their Costa Rica trips is such a huge perk with a lot of potential! What they or I didn’t realize is that they have the ability to provide an exceptionally inclusive tour to DHH people. I actually invited my deaf friend to join me last minute thinking we could buddy-up if we didn’t follow daily conversations, not to mention just sharing a wonderful trip with her! The feeling and experience of getting lost in a large group setting while trying to follow conversations around the dinner table just didn’t happen here; my friend and I were able to have conversations with other people all the time. If you’re a Deaf/deaf or hard of hearing person you know exactly what I am talking about. The guides were great at giving us the right mix of freedom and demonstrated a lot of patience when we did need information, not to mention all the laughter in between. I can imagine if you were travelling with a buddy/partner who is DHH you would definitely get a break. There was also a ripple effect of positivism with everyone and the other guests while even learning and using some sign language. All of the guides were on hand to assist in any way that they could; we had daily briefings in the mornings and during our tours. The tour guides were flexible, adaptive, and willing to speak directly and clearly, use any form of communication whether in writing or just having flashlights on their faces so we could see them in the dark, as well as use assistive listening devices to aid in hearing; in this case I had a private bluetooth microphone/speaker. In some cases communication was demonstrated physically and visually (such as paddling). Seriously, with such strange settings like being in a cave, on a night walk, water rafting, kayaking, or snorkeling; there was never a (dull) moment where we felt left out or forgotten. Glenn and his staff made sure we got the most pertinent information that everyone else got whether it was a either a lame joke or an important piece of information about the "last volcano eruption and when the next one would be", something like 300 years for the next major eruption, or any other a safety issue that was more immediate. I never experienced and absorbed so much information; I definitely realized how much I must have been missing out on other trips. At times I acted as a liaison for my friend and we were super impressed with so much patience by the guides. I have left feeling as a confident and assertive worldly traveller; I would absolutely love to join LAO again and I definitely miss the staff both in NS and Costa Rica. I want to bring my deaf and hard-of-hearing friends on this trip.
Some of the other reasons I chose this trip was the itinerary (variety/quantity), that all meals were included, we were being picked up at the airport, value of the trip, and length of the trip. I don’t know what more I could ask for. The biking trips I’ve researched are over $5000 for just 5 days, with over +12 people, and then $1500 extra for a private room, and with fewer meals.
I really enjoy experiencing the path of more authentic travel with less chaos, people, and tourism and yet try to supporting the community I’m visiting. These things are hard to find today and that’s what makes the LAO Costa Rica tour stand out. The fact that we were provided with a local guide and driver was amazing; communication became easy as we got to know each other over the tour. There is nothing like sitting with a local in their kitchen or being encouraged to try food and sort out the menu at one's favourite restaurant, driving by someone's own yard listening to the history of their farmland, or walking into the forest at night and looking for nocturnal wildlife while not freaking out in their forested 75 acre backyard. The sincere hospitality and love of LAO extended out to these guys! To watch cooks every morning in our kitchen and sharing their recipes with us was special. The experienced guides from LAO and local staff offered a “merging" of knowledge, safety, and security. At one point we drove to this small town specifically to find the driver’s favourite restaurant; one that a larger tour would overlook and never take you to, to experience an amazing authen”tico” meal at a place we’d call "a hole in the wall”. Just pulling over in a random parking lot to get a fresh coconut beverage, in +35 weather, certainly shows a simple act of kindness from Glenn towards myself and the vendor; it certainly beats eating salty snow out of a Canadian ditch. Eh!
A testimonial coming from someone who is DHH and experienced the tour with a DHH friend in 2023! We absolutely loved it!"
